We fly circles around the Y-Wings. Ever hear of a Y-Wing in Rogue Squadron? Pssshhh. The only downtown Y-wings encounter on the Deathstar is "going down". X-Wings actually blew it up. WE made those Bothans proud.

In the old Empire Strikes Back sketch book, the original concept drawings for the snow speeder depict is as a modified Y-Wing cockpit. And according to another drawing, the snow speeders were home made.

They did carry a large payload of like 8 proton torpedoes (if my memory serves me correctly) and ion cannons which most other interceptors and fighters didn't. Before B-wings and (later) K-wings started to be used, it was a good all around piece of equipment.
